Shadow Yoga For Beginners
We know that Shadow Yoga is unfamiliar to most people, so we do our best to explain the benefits of Shadow Yoga and how to get started, which is why our website is so, well, thorough. Written information can be helpful, but the best way to see if Shadow Yoga is a good fit for you is to attend a drop in class, meet the teacher and get a feel for the practice. Shadow Yoga beginners can start with any of the Shadow Yoga I classes, a workshop or community sangha, or the three-session Intro Series.
I'm New to Shadow Yoga. What Should I Expect?
Teaching Style
Students of Shadow Yoga benefit from a close teacher-student relationship, as the teacher shares responsibility for your growth and aims to offer the right balance of challenge and support. Classes are small, so students are seen and encouraged to proceed according to their natural limits, not based on an ideal standard of strength or flexibility. The teacher recognizes that meaningful progress takes time, and that humans thrive in an environment of compassion, humor and enough challenge to initiate change without feeling defeated.
Class Format, Drop-In Classes
Most classes begin at the whiteboard, with a short introduction to a theme or topic. You are then guided through the standing Shadow Yoga warm-ups; larger, full-body movements such as squats and lunges; and circular or linear sun salutations, all of which are thoroughly instructed and modified for the students in the room. Warm-downs complete the physical practice, and we close each class with discussion and reflection.
Yoga Philosophy Woven In
Yoga philosophy is not separate from physical activity. Shadow Yoga teachers are steeped in the principles which undergird the practice, and they weave this wisdom into every class. There are reasons for the techniques being taught, the sequences being learned and the instructions being given, and Shadow Yoga teachers explain these components in clear, accessible language that helps students find meaning and purpose in the activity. This approach creates a rich, layered experience for even the most seasoned students, who report a depth of practice not found in other classes.
What a beautiful yoga space in Bend and an incredibly knowledgeable instructor. Angie gives such concise, specific and anatomical instruction that it has helped to me to deepen my yoga practice, which is not even Shadow yoga. Her classes are like a workshop in a really good way.
